These are the parameters that affect the faceting of the STL. When exporting to STL in your CAD package, you may see parameters for chord height, deviation, angle tolerance, poly count, or something similar. 3D printing can only accept a certain file size therefore it’s important to find a balance between your model, its desired surface, and the 3D printing process of your choice. However, the smoother/ less faceted your surface is, (the higher the poly count or triangulation) the larger your file. If the STL is coarse and faceted the physical 3D printed model will be coarse and faceted as well. You cannot build the model smoother than the STL file. The parameters used for outputting a STL will affect how much faceting occurs (Figures 2 and 3).

STL is a triangulated representation of a 3D CAD model (Figure 1). Wavefront 3D, CADRazor, Adobe Photoshop, LogiKal, UVMapper, LightWave 3D, Autodesk Maya, IMSI TurboCAD Deluxe, MeshLab, MAXON Cinema 4D, Smith Micro Poser, Autodesk AutoCAD.STL is the standard file type used by most additive manufacturing systems. TurboCAD, GOM Inspect, STL Viewer, Geomagic Explorer, Parametric Technology Creo, Dassault Systemes CATIA, Ke圜reator, MeshLab, SolidWorks, Pro/Engineer, CloudCompare, Blender, AutoCAD, 3D Studio Max, Autodesk Inventor, Mechanical Desktop OBJ coordinates have no units, but OBJ files can contain scale information in a human-readable comment line. Vertices are stored in a counter-clockwise order by default, making explicit declaration of face normals unnecessary. The OBJ file format is a simple data format that represents 3D geometry alone - namely, the position of each vertex, the UV position of each texture coordinate vertex, vertex normals, and the faces that make each polygon defined as a list of vertices, and texture vertices. As a result, STL files contain no scale information, and the units are arbitrary. All STL coordinates were required to be positive numbers in the original specification, but this restriction is no longer enforced, and negative coordinates are commonly encountered in STL files today.
